What I'm trying to do is show what I have now, and then do a bunch of different permutations. The challenge of this space is that it is really small. We're talking like 12' x 7'.

Helping My Mom with Her Upstairs Bedroom

So, when I moved out of my parents' house, and this room specifically, to go to college, it became a junk room for my mom. She got rid of all my belongings (toys, mementos, old clothes...) but kept the old handed-down furniture, thus making the room still feel pretty claustrophobic. She moved her sewing items into this room, but she hasn't sewn in years. Neither her nor my dad has used this room in a long, long time (a decade?). Recently, she expressed some interest in fixing this room up so that her grandkids can have a sleepover at her house. I think this is a great idea! Here's what I suggested to her...

One of my favorite things to do with my three-year-old is to look through design magazines and pick the rooms we'd like to live in. My son picked out a room he particularly liked (Image 2), and I created a moodboard for it (Image 1).

The trick with a "rainbow" room is to have areas where the eye can rest, like the white duvet. In the inspiration image, the white rug also does this, but white rugs are impractical, so I replicated the greenery outside the inspiration room's window with a rug solid rug in the moodboard. The white prints in the moodboard also serve to create some visually quiet spaces.

I will say that the moodboard was not meant to replicate the inspiration room precisely because I wanted to stay true to my own personal style. For example, I don't really like the chair in the inspiration room. And I inserted my own bedside table in my moodboard (if you were doing this for your room, you'd probably want to choose a white bedside table).

Challenges:

The tan color was a little hard to source because there are many words that all can mean tan - flax, beige, camel, and sand can be the same color, but internet listings may not list the word you choose to search for in lieu of another, similar word for the same thing! Also, I believe the curtains and the pillow on the bench may be custom (made specifically for this room using fabric and some seamstress skills), so I could not find a ready-made close match for the curtains.

Kid (and Adult) Craft Room

When I was growing up, I did not have a play room. This, combined with a lack of sufficient toy storage (furniture or containers) in my bedroom, meant that my toys cluttered up my bedroom (as well as any other room that I could get away with leaving them in).

So, now that I'm a mom, I want to make it a priority to give my kid(s) enough space to store his(their) things - toys, art supplies, and games. Currently, I am in the process of setting up a kids’ craft space even though my kid is under one year old! (#BePrepared) This space will also double as my own crafting / creating space.

The one thing from my childhood bedroom / home that I wish I had was a small (11"x14"?) poster-sized photograph of a full moon at night. I’ve tried to find something similar on Etsy but have not been successful yet.

Main Goals for my Kids’ and Adults’ Craft Room:

• Plenty of space to create
• Plenty of space to store supplies
• It will be okay to get it messy
• It will be inspiring and colorful
• It will be (relatively) cat-proof

Additional Goals:

• Have white walls with pops of color
• Display my child's(children's) artwork and create artwork together
• Specialize - instead of storing every craft item imaginable, I will be focusing on paper crafts and cross stitch for me, and coloring and painting for the kiddo(s)

Notes:

• I will cover a normal trashcan with a print of constellations or some map-like print
• The sheets on the daybed are actually green, not rainbow stripes like in the mood board
• I have a love/hate relationship with the rug in this space

Intermediate Master Bedroom Moodboard

Here is my moodboard at the half-way mark in my class. I am not sure if the mix of metals (chrome, silver, antique brass) is working. I'm also not sure about the colors - this design probably needs more navy. I also wanted to add in some pale yellow but could not find any suitable items. I guess that color isn't "in" this year.

Aspirational Mood Board for Spa-Like Master Bathroom

Just because my "master bathroom" is also "THE bathroom" doesn't mean it can't be pretty. Here is my aspirational mood board - it has: a spa-like feel, luxurious bath products, nickel hardware, a soaker tub, and plenty of neutral colors (ivory, white, and mushroom).

The above board is for my dining room. This board has a coastal vibe, much like my adjoining living room. It also: is fun / cheerful, has plenty of doses of blue, leans towards symmetry / matching-ness (as opposed to shabby chic or deliberately mismatched items), and has some vintage-y florals.

Current Master Bedroom

I created this mood board for my master bedroom. Other than the rug, all of the items in this board are items I already own. I wanted to create this board as an evaluating tool for future purchases - I can now see how new items will look in my room. Autumn Decorating Using Warm Colors

Inspiration
When it is fall, usually people prefer a bit more warmth in their homes. This can be achieved by adding candles (such as vanilla or spice scented ones), or by incorporating warmer colors (oranges, reds, or gold), earth tones (yellows and browns), or warmer metals (like bronze or copper) into their rooms. People also crave practicality - you will want a space to sit down and take off your boots. Here is one example using a traditional entryway.
